The committee and I have thought long and hard about raising the subscription rates. They have not been increased for almost ten years and the club is now underfunded as a result. We have to pay our business rates, floodlights, heating, utilities, pitch hire and the list goes on. We have over 12k of out goings a year and took less than 4k through memberships and match fees last season. Simply put we will not be able to continue as a club if we do not increase the prices for all members. However it is more than just a case of asking for more, the current model relies too much on chasing too many people week in week out for payment, it's tiring and time consuming at a time when we have few enough volunteers and little enough time as it is. Therefore something had to change, that being said we realised that as paying members we should be ensuring you get suitable benefits in return. As a result we are moving to a larger single membership fee and offering a £40 discount to people who pay early or sign up to direct debit. Over 12 months this is just £15 a month and the new price will include all your match fees as well as food after home matches.

Beyond a simpler system with more benefits included we have worked hard to improve the condition of the clubhouse. Since last summer we have painted the changing rooms, repaired the electrics, flushed the heating and re-decorated the bar area. In addition we now have weights sessions at the club, twice a week training supported by a level 2 qualified coach and have entered four Sevens tournaments over the summer. Finally we have increased the number of social events both at and away from the club – after all a club that drinks together stays together!

On the subject of drinking we will also now have an “Introduce a Friend Offer”. For every new member brought to the club who signs up to a DD or pays in full you’ll both receive a £15 bar credit! We need more players so this is a great way for you to get more value from your membership and ensure we play more and win more, get calling your friends now! Don’t forget membership still gives you bar prices way lower than the high street and the chance to apply for international tickets at Twickenham.

Obviously things are not perfect, there are lots of areas to improve, especially for the Junior side of the club but the committee are committed to working hard to keep making things better so if you have an idea please talk to me or any other committee member about it – or better still volunteer yourself to make sure it gets done!
